"Ian
Dogole & Global Fusion... integrate a variety
of exotic drums into the mix on Ionospheres....
Dogole explores American jazz with Middle Eastern
and African drums. It works well on these eight
tracks, where instruments such as mbira, udu,
talking drum, dumbek and caxixi swing just as
ably as any Western drum set. While Dogole proves
himself to be an impressive all-around percussionist,
this writer was knocked out by his work on mbira
- African thumb piano - on which he improvises
lyrical arpeggios and melodies like few others
have. Other than Dogole's eclectic percussion
setup, the instrumentation on Ionospheres is
a fairly standard lineup of bass, piano and
horns - with the exception of Eric Golub's haunting
viola and Japanese kokyu. . [Dogole] and his
band... play their collective butts off."
