For 45 years, Bread & Roses Presents (www.breadandroses.org) has uplifted people of all ages who are isolated in institutional settings. The organization achieves this mission through the daily presentation of free, live musical performances (over 600 per year throughout the Bay Area) that offer hope and healing and rekindle the human spirit.

Bread & Roses is deeply committed to serving disadvantaged children from high-risk neighborhoods, many of whom are homeless or from immigrant families or single-parent households. In fact, one-third of Bread & Roses’ performances are delivered to at-risk children and youth. To better serve these children, Bread & Roses is bringing more programs to child-centered facilities and recruiting additional performers to serve them. Many of these facilities are Head Start sites, low-income child development centers and other community partners serving at-risk children.

The Benefit Concert

In order to fund its program expansion, Bread & Roses needs the community to step up with critical financial support.

To this end, Ian Dogole (www.iandogole.com), recording artist, bandleader, percussionist and long-time Bread & Roses volunteer, has created a special concert to help in this effort. This event will feature Ian and a cast of world-class musicians who will create music rooted in the Jazz and World music traditions to open your hearts, uplift your souls and unite our community in support of a truly heroic organization – Bread & Roses Presents.

Attendees will be treated to a musical program that features the ancestral sound journeys of indigenous pan-American flutes, Vietnamese jaw harp and didgeridu of René Jenkins with African drums and melodic percussion of Ian Dogole … to the soaring, stellar voice of Deborah Winters … to the spell-binding voice and uplifting saxophones of Richard Howell … to an original composition by Ian Dogole on East-African kalimba that celebrates orca whales … to fresh interpretations of compositions by Thelonious Monk, Wayne Shorter, Randy Weston and Leon Thomas, featuring luminous Bay Area improvisers Frank Martin on piano, Fred Randolph on double bass and Eric Golub on viola.

All of this in one show and for such a great cause!

We hope you will join us in supporting the spirited, caring mission of Bread & Roses at this special event.

A portion of the proceeds from this special event will benefit Bread & Roses’ programs for disadvantaged children.
